FIND OUT MOREOwl Project is an art collective consisting of three members - Simon Blackmore, Antony Hall and Steve Symons. Using influences ranging from woodwork and electronics to art and open source software, they have created a range of fully functional musical instruments, crafted from rustic, hollowed out logs. The judges were impressed by the highly original nature of the work and the social message behind it, which forces us to question our attitudes towards the disposability of modern technology.
Jayne Compton has been an important player in Manchester's music scene for over a decade. In 1999, she collaborated with Chloe Poems to launch the critically acclaimed club night Club Brenda, fusing art, music, poetry and performance. She has set up her own record label, Switchflicker Records, which launched the Ting Tings' stellar career through the release of the hit single, That's Not My Name. And she has a soon to be published book, Strange Trees, courtesy of the Arts Council. Jayne was singled out for the colourful impact she has long been making on Manchester's music scene.
Max Moran was shortlisted for a diverse portfolio of work, including the collaborative video-based music blog, ThisTownSounds.com. Running since 2007, the blog has filmed exclusive performances by the likes of Florence & The Machine, and Max plans to expand it into a resource utilised by the global online music community. Max also runs two highly successful club nights - Hot Club and Hat Club - as well as record label Hit Club. He was praised in particular for the opportunities his work creates for new music in Manchester.
Holly Russell, who has recently graduated from Manchester School of Art, stunned judges with her graduate collection, which featured pieces covered with individually hand-sewn scarab beetle wings. She was also praised for her imagination and use of unusual materials in her work, such as aluminium.
Holly has recently been selected to show at Graduate Fashion Week - the catwalk show of the UK's leading fashion colleges, where the likes of Julien Macdonald and Stella McCartney first made their mark.
