There is a place in Manchester where all the gorgeous costumes created for Royal Exchange Theatre's period productions retire to. It's the theatre's Costume Hire department on Swan Street and it's absolutely divine - packed with endless rails of Victorian, Medieval, Tudor, Elizabethan and other period costumes, props and accessories. From dreamy ball gowns to striking headpieces and armour sets, everything here is available for hire to jazz up any special occasion. For viewing appointments ring 0161 819 6660 or email costume.hire@royalexchange.co.uk.

Standing proud on Quay Street, the Opera House first opened on Boxing Day 1912. Ninety-seven years later, the imposing building remains one of the city's best-loved theatres, having staged countless magnificent shows, including Phantom of the Opera, Oliver and the Rat Pack Live. Don't miss Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's wickedly funny musical Little Shop of Horrors this month. Tickets cost £12.50 - £29.50 and you can book by calling 0844 847 2295. Visit www.operahouse.org.uk for all the details.

Lose yourself in a world of feathers, glitter, music and deliciously mischievous fun at The Birdcage (Withy Grove, opposite the Printworks). Outrageous and flamboyant, the nightclub is abuzz with Vegas-style drag and showgirl cabaret shows. This is a place less ordinary, where disco, drama and passion are always the fashion. April 5 is Elvis Night - Elvis impersonator Gordon Hendricks and a full band will bring some of that old Vegas magic to Manchester as they perform all The King's hits. Visit www.birdcagelive.com for details.
