FIND OUT MOREManchester's oldest surviving theatre could be restored to its former glory, if plans to make it the new home of the city's Library Theatre Company get the go-ahead.
Dating back to 1845, Theatre Royal on Peter Street was originally designed for drama and opera productions but, after a few reincarnations, the Grade II listed building now houses a nightclub.
If the proposal is approved, Theatre Royal will be restored to its original purpose, offering the Library Theatre Company a larger space than its current home at Central Library.
The proposed move is part of a £155 million scheme to transform Manchester's Town Hall Complex, including St Peter's Square.
Manchester's creative director, Peter Saville, has designed a limited edition gift wrap as part of the city's Christmas marketing campaign (pictured above).
In keeping with Manchester's 'original modern' ethos, the design guru used a multi-coloured abstract pattern to subtly evoke the emotion of Christmas in a contemporary way.
This is the first time Saville has designed a wrapping paper, and only 5,000 tubes are available from selected outlets, including the Tourist Information Centre in St Peter's Square, priced at £2.99 each.
The former Yang Sing Hotel, on Princess Street, will reopen as Roomzzz Aparthotel from mid-December.
This will be the first Manchester site for Roomzzz, which currently runs three luxury serviced apartment buildings in Leeds.
Roomzzz Manchester will consist of 48 individually designed apartments serviced by a 24-hour concierge.
Manchester City Council has approved plans to replace the existing Irish World Heritage Centre in Cheetham Hill with a new, internationally significant attraction - a stone and timber building that echoes an ancient Irish ring fort.
The new centre, which is at the heart of a 25-acre site complex on Queen's Road, is one of the headline projects in the regeneration of north Manchester. It is hoped that future development phases in the area will include a hotel, a gym, playing fields and 250,000 sq ft of employment space.
