It's been a long way coming, but Manchester music venue Band on the Wall has finally announced its first season since closing for redevelopment over four years ago.
The iconic venue relaunches on Sept 25 with a diverse, month-long music showcase to celebrate its reopening and give fans a taster of what's to come.
Headlining the relaunch celebration are soul diva Mica Paris (pictured above) and legendary jazz pianist Julian Joseph. The programme also includes 2008 Mercury Music Prize nominated The Unthanks (formerly Rachel Unthank & The Winterset) and seminal funk punk pioneers A Certain Ratio among other acclaimed artists from across the globe. After nearly nine years of planning and two years of renovation works, the Fusilier Museum in Bury has just opened its doors to visitors.
The museum boasts interactive and user-friendly displays exploring the 300-year history of the Lancashire Fusilier Regiment and the 40-year history of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers - from the streets of Northern Ireland to Afghanistan, where the regiment is currently on active service.
Built in the former Arts and Crafts Centre on Moss Street, it also houses a shop, a cafe and the town's tourist information centre. For details visit www.fusiliersmuseum-lancashire.org.uk.
The Manchester Museum has added an interesting new exhibit to its collection - Ansuman Biswas, who has been recruited as a resident hermit for 40 days and nights.
Until Aug 5, the Calcutta-born artist will be living in isolation in the museum's Gothic tower, examining some of the hidden gems in its vast collection. Although cut off from all physical contact with others, he will use a blog to engage members of the public in a virtual debate about preservation and extinction.
Biswas has had previous stints as a hermit for the National Trust - a job that required him to live in a cave in the countryside. Over the last few years his work has also included designing underwater sculptures in the Red Sea, living with wandering minstrels in India, making a musical in a maximum security prison and being sealed in a box for ten days with no food or light.
The Trafford Centre has revealed a raft of new schemes to tackle energy, water and recycling issues in a bid to become the greenest shopping and leisure centre in the UK.
The swanky, 230-store retail giant is cutting its carbon footprint in every area of its business. Initiatives include installing new, greener lighting systems and fitting water displays with new gadgets that cut the electricity used during high winds. The centre is also putting recycling bins in public areas, reducing the operating hours of its escalators and slashing its water taps' running time in half.
By the end of 2010, it hopes to have cut its energy consumption by ten per cent and increased its recycling to cover 50 per cent of its waste.
The days of driving around Manchester city centre for hours trying to find a parking space are over, as National Car Parks (NCP) launches a valet parking service in the heart of the city.
Before you drive into the city, you can now arrange to have your car collected by NCP valet drivers at a location of your choice. For £20, your car will be driven to a secure parking area close to Piccadilly, from where you can collect it when you are ready. Don't fancy walking to a collection point? You could pay a little extra and have the car returned to you when and where you want it - washed and polished if you wish. For more information visit www.ncp.co.uk/manchester.
