FIND OUT MOREThe Daniel Libeskind-designed Imperial War Museum North (IWMN) has been named the region's 'Large Visitor Attraction of the Year' at the 2009 Northwest Tourism Awards.
The museum (pictured above) beat competition from Tatton Park in Cheshire, Walby Park Farm in Cumbria, Blackpool Tower and Circus, and Liverpool Anglican Cathedral to win the prestigious title. It will now represent the region in the national tourism awards, organized by Visit Britain, in 2010.
Located at The Quays, the IWMN reveals how war and conflict shape people's lives. It has won more than 20 awards since it opened seven years ago, including the 'Large Visitor Attraction of the Year' title at the 2009 Manchester Tourism Awards earlier this year.
X Factor winner Alexandra Burke will help to launch a cracking programme of festive events across Manchester this month, when she performs at the city's annual Christmas lights switch-on ceremony.

The Spinningfields Ice Rink will also be back from Nov 12, 2009 until Jan 3, 2010, and Piccadilly Gardens will once again host an open air snow slide plus a few new attractions, including an ice palace with Santa's grotto.
Following the unveiling of an £80 million redevelopment plan earlier this year, Manchester Airport has just been named 'Airport of the Year'.
Voted for by travel agents and independent industry observers, the Travel Trade Gazette Awards are the industry's Oscars, where Manchester Airport beat London Luton, Southampton and Birmingham airports to win the coveted top prize.
Airports were judged on their facilities, customer service standards, investment, innovation, travel trade relations, business strategy, environmental performance and commitment to their local communities.
Manchester Airport has unveiled its latest security gadget - a state-of-the-art scanner that can see through passengers' clothes.
A 12-month voluntary trial has just started in Terminal 2, giving passengers the chance to test this imaging technology machine that could soon replace physical pat-down searches in a bid to improve security.
The scanner works by bouncing X-rays off an individual's skin to produce a black and white outline of the person's body. The image is then transmitted to a security officer based in another part of the airport, who checks for any concealed, potentially dangerous objects.
Airport bosses are adamant that the process is anonymous and does not invade passengers' privacy, as the security officer who monitors the X-ray cannot see the actual individual whose image comes up on screen.
They also claim it will reduce waiting times, with passengers no longer having to remove coats, jackets, shoes and belts before going through security.
The annual Manchester Food and Drink Festival came to an end last month, with the announcement of this year's award winners.
At a gala dinner hosted by the Hairy Bikers, Si King and Dave Myers, The Modern was named Restaurant of the Year, Ian Matfin from Abode Manchester was crowned Chef of the Year and Apotheca was declared Best Bar.
Other winners include Dough Pizza Kitchen (Best Family Friendly Venue), Lass O'Gowrie (Best Pub), Folk Cafe Bar in West Didsbury (Best Coffee Bar/ Casual Dining) and Mrs Kirkham's Cheese (Producer of the Year). Dobber, by the Marble Brewery, was named Best Beer Brewed in Manchester.
The manager of Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson, headlined the official opening of the appropriately named Red Hall Hotel in Bury.
Sir Alex made a flying visit to the hotel to cut the ribbon just before United's victorious clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford on Sept 23. He followed in the footsteps of his predecessor, Sir Matt Busby, who attended the opening of the Red Hall's sister hotel in the Lake District 23 years ago.
Owned by the Kilroe family, who are all lifelong United fans and close friends of Sir Alex, the Red Hall Hotel has reopened after a £5 million refurbishment. It comprises 37 bedrooms, a restaurant and bar, and three conference suites.
