People

Each month, All About Manchester speaks to a high profile celebrity with a connection to Manchester.

Lee Mead

TV talent shows have been known to change winners' lives, and no-one knows that better than 28-year-old Lee Mead. Interview by Sophia Cruz.

Gray O'Brien

Scottish actor Gray O'Brien has become a household name as villainous businessman Tony Gordon in Coronation Street. This month, he takes evil up a notch to play Abanazar in Aladdin - the Christmas pantomime at the Opera House. Sophia Cruz talks to an actor who is famously good at being bad.

Suranne Jones

Suranne Jones first stormed into our living rooms as the brassy Karen McDonald in Coronation Street but has since blossomed as an actress, as her roles have grown progressively tougher - from Joanne Galloway in the West End show A Few Good Men to Ray Winstone's sidekick in detective series Vincent and ex-con Ruth Slater in ITV drama Unforgiven. This month, as she prepares to tread the boards at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Noël Coward's comedy Blithe Spirit, the Oldham-born star tells All About Manchester she is ready for any challenge.

Beggar Joe

Manchester has produced some great bands down the years. From The Smiths to Oasis and from The Stone Roses to Elbow, the city is synonymous with ground-breaking music. Now, as they release their first album, five-piece blues and soul outfit Beggar Joe are aiming for a space on that great band pedestal and, word on the street is, they might just make it.

Connie Fisher

Connie Fisher was the toast of London's west end as Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music. But as she reprises her role for the UK touring production of the show, the 26-year-old actress tells All About Manchester her life is not all glitz and glamour.

Guy Garvey

Life is good for Elbow's Guy Garvey. After a 20-year slog, the Manchester fivesome have finally won the world over with their evocative, melodic rock, and their frontman is getting hotter by the minute. But don't think fame is going to his head. Ahead of the band's M.E.N Arena concert this month, Garvey explains to All About Manchester why he'll never be too big for his hometown.

Sally Lindsay

The Royal Exchange Theatre has become a home from home for Manchester actress Sally Lindsay, who returns to the round stage for the second time in less than a year to star in Neil Bartlett's Everybody Loves a Winner. A week into rehearsals for this brand new play, which will transform the iconic theatre into a bingo hall, the former coronation street favourite tells All About Manchester she does not believe in luck.

Lucy Porter

Croydon-born comedienne Lucy Porter has come a long way since her virginal gigs at Manchester's Frog and Bucket, but although she has ditched her clothes for her latest show, she has kept the fluff. As her spring UK tour brings her to the Lowry, the 36-year-old gagsmith bares all to All About Manchester.

Chris Hoy

Last summer, Scottish cyclist Chris Hoy made history in Beijing by becoming the first British athlete in 100 years to win three gold medals at a single Olympic Games. He was subsequently crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year, beating Lewis Hamilton and Rebecca Adlington to the honour. The 32-year-old sports star talks to All About Manchester about his meteoric rise to fame and his down-to-earth life in Manchester.

Oliver Lang

There is no more eloquent way of describing the youthful energy that defines Manchester than the image of a sea of bodies ebbing and flowing across the dance floor to Oliver Lang's chunky, underground tech-house sound. All About Manchester chats with the DJ superstar in the making as he kicks off a new residency at Area 51.

Gemma Atkinson

From getting showered with creepy crawlies in the Aussie jungle to swimming with sharks in South Africa and trekking a treacherous 60km uphill in China, Gemma Atkinson has done some pretty wild things for our entertainment recently. This Christmas, the Manchester actress and glamour model will add flying to her long list of daredevil acts when she steps into the boots of Peter Pan in her hotly anticipated theatre debut at the Opera House. The 24-year-old pin-up tells All About Manchester she cannot wait to release the tomboy in her on stage.

Sally Lindsay

How do you get a theatre audience in the noughties to care about a highly incompetent mother in the fifties? The Royal Exchange Theatre has found the answer to this question in the form of Manchester actress Sally Lindsay. The 35-year-old bubbly blonde, who became a household name as Shelly Unwin in Coronation Street, has been cast in the role of roving mother Helen in Shelagh Delaney's iconic Salford drama A Taste of Honey. Appealing to the audience's sense of empathy as Helen may not be easy, but the actress tells All About Manchester she will give it her best shot.

Jusin Moorhouse

After making a splash at this year's Edinburgh Festival, Manchester comic Justin Moorhouse is now touring with his critically acclaimed new show. On the eve of his Manchester Comedy Festival date, the 38-year-old father of two talks to All About Manchester about friendship, fear and why rude people aren't funny.

Mike MccLean

If you've ever watched daytime TV you probably know his face from kids' shows on Nickelodeon to Channel 4's Big Breakfast and Richard and Judy, Mike MccLean has done it all. Now, the cheeky presenter from Levenshulme has returned home after a 14-year absence to host Xfm's Breakfast Show. On a grey Mancunian morning, he talks to All About Manchester about rising early and spreading the cheer.

Louise Dearman

Stepping into the shoes of Eva Peron is a daunting task, but one that Louise Dearman is managing with flying colours in Bill Kenwright’s new stage musical Evita. The fabulous leading lady talks to All About Manchester about playing one of the most fascinating women in history.

Mike Walker

The late Tony Wilson once told this magazine that jazz was dead and smelled funny. Wilson was a great man and we had enormous respect for him, but he obviously didn’t know jack about jazz. World-class jazz guitarist Mike Walker sets the record straight.

Marti Pellow

From Wet Wet Wet frontman to solo jazz artist and stage musical actor, Marti Pellow has proven time and time again that he is not afraid to take risks in his career. We catch up with him on the press launch of his new show, The Witches of Eastwick.

Maxine Peake

From slacker Twinkle in Victoria Wood's Dinnerladies to the brassy Veronica in Shameless and the cold blooded Myra Hindley in See No Evil, Maxine Peake has gone to great lengths to avoid being typecast. This spring, as she prepares to star in the Royal Exchange Theatre's production of The Children's Hour, she tells All About Manchester she is returning to her roots in more ways than one.

Paula McNamara

As Fashion Weekend Manchester approaches, Andrew Watson catches up with award-winning local fashion stylist and illustrator Paula McNamara to find out what it takes to survive in her cut-throat industry.

Carlos Acosta

From breakdancing in the backstreets of Havana to conquering the world of international ballet, Carlos Acosta is as famous for his rags-to-riches story as for his prodigious talent.

Simon Webbe

As one quarter of cheeky pop outfit Blue, Mancunian singer/songwriter Simon Webbe was used to arenas packed with screaming teenagers. But as he embarks on his first ever tour as a solo artist, he tells All About Manchester he is ready to stand on his own feet.

Val McDermid

Multi-award-winning crime writer Val McDermid (Wire in the Blood, The Last Temptation, A Place of Execution) was born in Scotland but made Manchester her adopted home. We catch up with her for a quick chat before her hotly anticipated appearance in queerupnorth.

Jon Christos

His looks are Greek, his accent Mancunian and his voice, well his voice is just out of this world. As Jon Christos prepares for his first big solo concert in Manchester, he retraces his steps from Salford's terraces to international concert halls.

Georgia Taylor

She shot to fame as Toyah Battersby in Coronation Street, but since quitting the ITV soap Georgia Taylor has spread her wings wider, proving there is life (and fame) after Weatherfield.

Flic Everett

She is most famous for her sex tips but relationship guru Flic Everett also knows a thing or to about showing your kids a good time in Manchester.
