FIND OUT MOREFlorida is world famous for its theme parks. From Walt Disney World to Universal Orlando, the city is a living, breathing testament to the power of the human imagination.
Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando
Grown ups may have mixed feelings about the world's largest and most visited recreational resort, but I have yet to meet a child who has been to Walt Disney World and not loved every minute of it.
In the resort's four glittering theme parks you can come face to face with your favourite Disney characters, immerse yourself in a 3-D film, scream your heart out in a haunted mansion, take part in an interactive comedy showcase, ride on a rollercoaster, be dazzled by a fireworks extravaganza, sing along to Broadway-style musical productions, go on a safari expedition, soar high over California and even blast off into space.
There are also two awesome water parks (although one of them, Blizzard Beach, is closed for refurbishment until March 20) promising wonderful adventures. From catching waves in huge surf pools to zooming down exhilarating water slides and enjoying family raft rides, there is something for everyone to enjoy here.
Add dozens of hotels and a dizzying range of shopping, dining, leisure and entertainment venues and you have a holiday destination that will leave you wide-eyed with amazement.
Universal Orlando Resort
Featuring two theme parks (Universal Studios Florida and Universal's Islands of Adventure), three themed hotels and a massive night-time entertainment complex, Universal Orlando Resort is the place to visit if you want to get inside your favourite movies.
The Simpsons, Shrek, Barney, Popeye, E.T., the Incredible Hulk and many more movie and TV legends are waiting for you here. You can swing and soar high above the city streets with Spider-Man, fight against evil aliens alongside Agent J and join Shrek in his escapades in Shrek 4-D. You can also experience some of the world's fastest and scariest rides - perfect for adrenaline junkies young and old.
Don't miss the brand new addition to Universal's Islands of Adventure - The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - which is scheduled to open this spring. The hotly anticipated attraction will allow you to pass through the gates of Hogwarts and explore Harry Potter's world, as well as try new, pulse-pounding rides.
Adjacent to the Universal Orlando Resort is the popular Wet 'n Wild waterpark, boasting a vast variety of multi-passenger tube rides. While you go wild, your children can play safely in the Kids' Park, which features smaller versions of the adult rides.
SeaWorld, Orlando
A massive adventure park, SeaWorld offers live shows with trained animals, rollercoaster thrills and animal exhibits. You can check out a theatrical spectacular starring acrobatic dolphins and stunt actors; ride on the Manta - the only flying rollercoaster of its kind in the world; and come face to face with sharks, killer whales, dolphins, turtles, manta rays and other sea creatures.
SeaWorld's Discovery Cove, Orlando
This 30-acre retreat is a lush tropical hideaway, where you can relax on white-sand beaches, float along a tropical river, explore artificial coral reefs teeming with native fish and rays, and watch tropical birds feeding from your hand in a truly remarkable aviary.
The highlight of most people's visit here is the opportunity to swim with dolphins in a tranquil lagoon. This 30-minute interactive adventure, which teaches you how to make friends with a dolphin, culminates in a thrilling dorsal fin tow back to shore.
Florida is a fantastic place to teach kids about wildlife and preservation. From the great natural wonder of the Everglades to Tampa's award winning Lowry Park Zoo, there is plenty here to educate and thrill children.
Everglades
Florida's famous Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the US, covering 2,500 sq m. A designated World Heritage Site, it contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the western hemisphere.
The park boasts a fascinating range of wildlife. There is a huge variety of birds, from wood storks to ibises and bald eagles; reptiles, including American crocodiles, alligators and snakes; and animals like Bobcats, American Mink and the critically endangered Florida Panther. Hike the Anhinga Trail, a half-mile self-guided tour through a sawgrass marsh, and check out the alligators, birds and turtles along the way.
An airboat ride will take you deeper into the River of Grass, as the vast water-covered wilderness of the Everglades is known. Or you could rent a canoe and explore Florida Bay, Whitewater Bay and the Ten Thousand Islands. As you paddle out into the mangroves, your kids will think you are Indiana Jones.
The Florida Aquarium, Tampa
The award-winning Florida Aquarium is home to more than 20,000 aquatic plants and marine animals from around the world, including river otters, alligators, stingrays and sharks.
Voted one of the US's top five kid-friendly aquariums, it also allows visitors to swim with the fishes in a coral reef dive site and dive with sharks in the ominously named Shark Bay.
After you've seen everything inside, you can come out and play at Explore A Shore - the aquarium's two-acre water adventure park. Featuring water canons and a two-storey waterlogged pirate ship, the park will keep the children blissfully busy while you relax with a drink at the Cantina.
Lowry Park Zoo, Tampa
Voted the best zoo in the US by Parents magazine, Lowry Park Zoo is home to more than 2,000 animals - from giraffes to goats and from penguins to ponies.
But whereas in most zoos you are expected to see and not touch, here you can actually interact with the animals. You can take a ride on the back of a camel, a pony or a llama; and you can touch and feed a range of animals, including rhinos, giraffes and stingrays. Hold up a cup of nectar and watch a lorikeet land on your hand to feed - it's an experience that you will remember for a very long time.
From building castles in the sand to snorkelling and shelling, Florida has a beach for every mood.
Clearwater
Florida's beaches are generally calmer on the Gulf of Mexico side of the state. Families with young children flock to the beaches of Clearwater to enjoy the soft sand and clear blue water. One of the most popular areas is Fort De Soto, which has recently been named America's top beach for the second consecutive year by online travel community TripAdvisor.
Sanibel Island
Another wonderful place for kids is Sanibel Island - a tropical paradise just a short ride from Fort Myers International Airport, boasting crystal clear water, miles of soft white sand, swaying coconut trees and lush foliage. Kids will love collecting pastel coloured seashells on Sanibel's famous shelling beaches, and you can sink your toes in the sand and watch the pelicans and herons swoop down into the water for fish. The island is also home to some great restaurants, shops and golf courses, so everyone will find something to do here.
