FIND OUT MOREKinofilm, Manchester's annual international short film festival, is one of the highlights of the city's cultural calendar. This year, the festival is expected to be bigger and better than ever, as it marks its tenth anniversary.
Manchester's first ever film festival, Kinofilm has come a long way since its launch in 1995 when just 100 films were shown in one venue. This year, it boasts 300 films at various venues across the city, between February 24 and March 5.
A mobile cinema in the shape of a specially adapted truck, called Cinemobile, will also tour Greater Manchester in the run-up to the festival- a novel concept to promote Kinofilm and take short film to local communities.
Innovation is at the heart of this year's Kinofilm. Sponsorship opportunities for the event were auctioned on eBay, for example, where theycaught the attention of its headline supporter, Baby Cow Manchester.
Set up in 1999 by acclaimed Mancunian comedian Steve Coogan and award-winning writer and producer Henry Normal, Baby Cow has since produced hits including '24 Hour Party People' and 'The Parole Officer'. Last year, it established a Manchester base, giving the city's creative industries a hugeboost.
Ric Michael, head of development at Baby Cow Manchester, explains how the prestigious production company bought a support package for Kinofilm on eBay.
"We had been discussing ways of getting involved in short comedy film and in the film infrastructure of the region when I received an e-mail from Kino pointing us to the eBay auction.
"Buying into a film festival like this appealed to our sense of humour and seemed a great way of confirming that we are serious about northern talent."
In addition to short films from Manchester and the North West, Kinofilm will feature work by emerging filmmaking talent from around the world. And,as an extra perk of Kinofilm's association with Baby Cow, film-lovers will also be treated to a Baby Cow Comedy Programme.
